Opt-In (Powers)

Castiel has a handful of powers that can cross over into godmodding territory without a player's express permission. For the sake of consistency and my own accountability, I'm going to assume the below powers will not work on a character, unless that player has opted into using the form below. (Since some of his powers will be nerfed anyway, this will be easy to explain away ICly, so no issue if you don't want to opt in and/or if you only want to opt in partially).

A full list of Castiel's powers can be found in his application here, for reference. The potentially godmodding powers referenced in this post are as listed below:

  • Angelic Perception - Castiel can identify someone's species and get a general read on their health, and whether or not they've got any wild magic stuff going on. With some more exploration (scent, physical touch, etc) he can get even more specific with the identification, to the point of diagnosing diseases or determining whether or not they've recently traveled through time.

I would play this power out by, essentially, metagaming. I already tend to read up on characters I'm threading with (if I'm not familiar with them) anyway, but for characters who opt-in, I'll use knowledge of their canonpoints, their personalities, their thoughts and feelings and character, to filter into Castiel's tags as mild observations. He may also sometimes say things aloud that seem a little too perceptive or on the nose, or I can keep those to a minimum if preferred.

  • Telepathy/Soul Reading - Castiel can read minds and souls to a degree; it's more of a production if he's trying to really look for something and comes at great risk to the one being read. He can also jam his hand right into someone's soul and get an idea of what it's like on a much more detailed level (it hurts like a motherfucker, and he can also siphon power off of a soul to heal himself/get stronger, but it's very dangerous. He can also do some mild mind-control stuff (suggestions, gentle coercion, implanting/removing thoughts or memories), but he utilizes it very rarely. I'm also going to shelve Prayer under this header; anyone who prays in his name specifically can deliver their words to him as if sending out a telepathic message.

I would play this power out by obviously just straight up writing Cas reading their minds. I'd use commentary or narrative flavor in received tags as cues and have Castiel pick up on surface thoughts where appropriate (to confirm, he doesn't do this very often as he's come to understand it's an invasion of privacy). Anything more forceful (soul-reading or siphoning, mind control, etc) will be specifically plotted out beforehand. As for prayer, I'll leave that to the other player's discretion, since Castiel can only receive prayers.

If you would opt into (fully or partially) Castiel being able to use these powers with your character, please fill out the below!

Thank you so much!

EDIT: If also, the form is too much and/or not necessary and you wanna just put a comment down there (like [personal profile] imhilarious) with a carte blanche permission, feel free!

the timing, tagging me right while i was in the middle of finishing this thing up
lmk if you need me to explain anything; his situation is fuckin weird and the wiki is frankly not great 🥲

Character Name & Series: Ghost Boy / Shion | The Hundred Line
Journal Name: [personal profile] asternal

Angelic Perception: Please do, take whatever you want from bracket text, etc. He canonically isn't great at lying and the only reason he's gotten away with what he has in Theorem, for as long as he has, is bc everyone else is being nice, tbh.
  • He does have a soul! Buuut... it's in his real physical body, which is actually a baby stuck in a life support jar. This is one of the main reasons why he's extremely hesitant to drop by Medical, SORRY CAS...
  • Idk if angelic perception works on astral projections or not, but that's what his fiery ghost avatar basically is: an astral projection that he makes using his magical blood powers, in order to circumvent his severe physical disability and be a person. Since his magical blood powers are intertwined with his soul, Cas might still be able to read his soul from it??? up to you
  • He's been given an android body by the Hosts for planetary explorations. TL;DR he uses his ghost form to control it, making him a literal ghost in the machine when he does. I typically try to make it clear in threads whether he's in his android body or not, but assume that ship = typical ghost form (his real body is in a jar in his room), and planets = android body unless otherwise stated.
  • He's a lil guy still learning about this whole emotions thing. He's been nigh-completely-isolated and dehumanized as a weapon/tool from birth, but was also (paradoxically) raised with genuine love outside of the mission, by his war criminal egg dad and has friends now. So he's felt things like (platonic) love, happiness, sadness, deeply cherishes those he knows, and is generally pure and kind at heart, but is still wrapping his head around stuff like rejection, jealousy, romantic love, etc. the rest of the more complicated emotional gamut that comes with the human experience, yk.
2nd scenario spoilers
  • Biologically, he is not actually human but an extremely similar humanoid alien species called a Futuran. Most of the biological differences between the two species are almost entirely cosmetic (that we know so far), but the major one is that Futurans are born with the potential for abnormal blood (cryptoglobin) that grants them magical powers (hemoanima). Cas can prolly pick up on some faint-to-notable nature spirit-esque divinity on him, since cryptoglobin is bestowed by the will/consciousness of the planet (a real thing that's worshipped by Futuran natives as their God with a capital G), and his is particularly strong.
  • He was raised to believe he was human and to "save humanity" from extinction, but at his canonpoint, he's now aware of his origins and that he's been on the side of the true aggressors the whole time, and being used to slaughter his own species and colonize a planet. Which leads to...
  • A bunch of guilt, of course. For the crime of (checks notes) existing. He has zero problem with the fact that he'll die no matter what on Day 100 of the mission, but all the problems ever with the fact that both factions in the war back home are trying to use him to genocide the other side.

Telepathy/Soul Reading: Go ahead. He doesn't have any defense against telepathy in Theorem, but he has some level of sensitivity since he also used to use telepathy to communicate, so he might tell him politely yet firmly to leave if he manages to catch Cas poking around in his head.

For the prayer thing, he's probably??? too culturally Japanese to be the devout praying type. He prays for the dead and likes to believe in a next life, yada yada but in the spiritual way yk. If he learns about it, he'd be far more likely to use it as a telepathic phone call for emergencies and whatnot.
