Character Name: Castiel
Canon: Supernatural
Canon Point: Post Season 8 episode 8
Character Age: At least 400 million years old (appearance 30s/40s)
History: wiki link
Division: MEDICAL. Tbh he was going to go with security because he would feel better with weapons, but he doesn't know how to use them anyway and then Dean showed up. And Cas was like oh shit I better have something that can put him back together.
Edict: THE EMPTY MACHINE. Honestly it was a close race, but I ended up on this Edict because I thought it would best highlight Castiel's eternal cycle of break it-fix it, why he continues to overreach, and why he always fails. He insists on not just punching out of his weight class, but being incapable of taking smaller victories (or even just fighting smaller battles). Maybe it's in his nature as an angel to always strive for better, more, higher, stronger, just to fall short due to his own hubris. At least he means well. (I also like the idea of The Empty Machine laying claim because they eventually want to devour something as big and old as him.)
Powers: Castiel is pretty OP fully juiced so I'll try to split is powers up in as many categories as possible for regains. I'm also very down for partial nerfing of regained powers, unless it's fine by you and don't seem overly game-breaking for him to have them at 100%.
- Angelic Strength - What it says on the tin for this one! He's real strong. Can lift at least a ton off the ground without much struggle, punch through walls, break bones like snapping twigs.
- General Invulnerability - Castiel cannot be wounded fatally outside of very specific circumstances. Stabbings, bullet wounds, burns, dismemberment, etc. are all healed instantly. He cannot bleed out, cannot develop infections or diseases, cannot die of radiation poisoning. Wounds from his angel blade (which he doesn't have yet), and wounds inflicted by other types of magic specifically geared towards harming celestial creatures will work. Holy fire and other kinds of celestial attacks (such as from other angels) can harm and kill.
- Angelic Stasis - Castiel, as a being composed of wavelengths and celestial intent, can maintain the physical body he inhabits in perpetual perfection from the point of possession. The vessel requires neither food, water, nor rest, and doesn't need to breathe to live or bathe to be clean.
- Matter Manipulation - Some limited telekinesis and pyrokinesis. He's manipulated smaller things like doors and bolts, and lit nearby objects on fire. Castiel doesn't tend to use this often or to great effect (mostly he likes to slam doors without touching them, all dramatic-like), so likely his ability to manipulate matter around him without touching it is not extensive.
- Angelic Perception - Castiel can identify someone's species and get a general read on their health, and whether or not they've got any wild magic stuff going on. With some more exploration (scent, physical touch, etc) he can get even more specific with the identification, to the point of diagnosing diseases or determining whether or not they've recently traveled through time.
- Telepathy/Soul Reading - Castiel can read minds and souls to a degree; it's more of a production if he's trying to really look for something and comes at great risk to the one being read. He can also jam his hand right into someone's soul and get an idea of what it's like on a much more detailed level (it hurts like a motherfucker, and he can also siphon power off of a soul to heal himself/get stronger, but it's very dangerous. He can also do some mild mind-control stuff like mimicking someone else's voice, but he utilizes it very rarely. I'm also going to shelve Prayer under this header; anyone who prays in his name specifically can deliver their words to him as if sending out a telepathic message. There's some evidence that only beings with souls will be heard, but I think that's unconfirmed fan theory.
- Greater Healing - Castiel can heal most wounds, including ones that could be fatal without treatment. Bullet wounds, broken bones, bruises, contusions; he's even been shown to heal medical conditions like hernias, and can cleanse diseases (or infections, even of a supernatural nature) out of the blood. Healing is largely instant and painless, but certain factors can make it uncomfortable or take time (the severity of the damage, whether or not he's "burning" an infection out of the blood, etc). Kinda OP, down to nerf if necessary.
- Angelic Flight - Unlike traditional flight (as achieved by birds or man-made objects such as planes), angelic flight is instantaneous. The show hasn't gone into details but it's been likened to teleportation; there's a soft sound like cloth or maybe wingbeats, but angels can appear, disappear, etc. They can cover enormous distances and can travel between planes of existence (IE Heaven to Earth, Hell to Earth, etc). This one could be game break-y so I'm very fine with nerfing or even making it unavailable.
- Time Travel - This being the most game breaking one, I'm putting it last assuming it cannot be returned. Under certain circumstances and limitations, Castiel can traverse through time a few decades to a couple centuries, sometimes with passengers or sometimes even just to send people back or pull them into the present. It takes a lot of energy and he never does it for funsies, simply because screwing around with time is a good way to get the Fates on your ass and also maybe will collapse reality if you're stubborn about it.
As the Ascendants deemed your character worthy of being on this exploration voyage, what qualities did they observe in your character that they found appropriate for the mission? If asked, Castiel would honestly say he just thought they saw he was old and potentially powerful, and wanted an angel around. Back home, having an angel on your team was sort of like bringing a bazooka to a knife fight, and he's under no delusions that angels (even at this point) tend to rank high on the 'weapons I'd like to have' list. Which makes it extra frustrating that he doesn't have access to any of his power.
What's closer to reality is that Castiel is just the right mix of stubborn, creative, and helpful to make for an extremely effective explorer. Given his age and what he is, there's very little that could rattle him enough to scare him off any more dangerous frontiers (especially given his usual reaction to being scared is to floor it right into the heart of that danger). He's durable and determined, and pack bonds almost like a human being. He's also capable of ruthlessness when needed, especially when it comes to saving individuals he cares about or completing a mission he believes in. It might take some work to earn his trust and loyalty given his background, but Castiel has evolved (mutated, some would call it) into the kind of being that is nigh unkillable and almost as unstoppable.
What is your character's best quality, what is their worst, and how do these two qualities affect each other?
Truthfully, Castiel's best and worst qualities are all double-sided coins. He tends to take traits to their opposite end extremes and makes vices of virtues (and vice-versa) constantly. Independence becomes isolation, determination becomes obsession, confidence becomes arrogance. Possibly the most obvious of these, though, is his heart. It's said on more than one occasion that Castiel's problem is that he cares too much; whether that's in general or that he just cares too much for an angel is never fully clarified, but it could explain why it ends up getting him into trouble.
Angels in general are not supposed to think, aren't supposed to care, aren't supposed to do anything they aren't ordered to do. It's to the point where if an angel is gentle or kind, that's seen as an aberration, punishable and in need of corrective measures. Mercy is doled out only by the word on high. Castiel might not fit the 'gentle' description often, but the genuine care and concern he shows his friends and, by association, human beings, grows greater the longer he finds himself on Earth. It's this love and consideration that causes him to rebel against his family, to butt up against the cruelty not just of other supernatural creatures but Heaven itself, over and over again. He asserts that angels are supposed to be caretakers, keepers and protectors of humanity, and it's gotten his brain wiped and reset (unbeknownst to him, as of right now) multiple times.
The unfortunate flipside of caring so much is that Castiel comes to view himself as a disposable tool meant for the protection of others. "Always happy to bleed for the Winchesters," he says once, tongue-in-cheek and a little touched in the head at the time, but the smile says it all. He's fully aware of the fact that he uses himself not just as a sword and a shield for humanity, but that he tends to disregard his own personhood in the pursuit of their safety. It's not noble; it's falling back into his nature as an angel, as a pawn only good for working towards a goal, winning a battle, advancing an agenda. How caring can one be towards their loved ones if they don't acknowledge how important they are to them? He subconsciously begins to liken his new family to his old one, where usefulness is the price of acceptance and obedience is the currency. He does a disservice to those who care about him, professing that he loves and cares for them to protect them, but never giving them the opportunity to show him the same consideration.
Your character's Edict appears in front of them, and agrees to grant them one wish: what does your character wish for?
This is assuming Castiel even believes his Edict really will grant him a wish...it depends entirely on who is here and how powered he is.
Castiel's wish would be precise and practical. Things like I wish to be happy or I wish I'd never released the Leviathan wouldn't even occur to him because they're too vague or they would screw with time. He would likely wish for something immediate and right in front of him. If any of his friends from home were here, he'd wish they'd be returned back to Earth. If nobody from home was here with him and if he hadn't made any friendships that he couldn't bear to abandon, he'd wish himself back to Earth, circa whenever he was taken. If going back home isn't on the table, he'd wish for his powers back so he'd at least be useful. There are others; if there was a disease ravaging the crew, he'd wish for the cure. If someone he cared about had died on the ship, he'd wish for their return.
In a moment of weakness he might consider wishing for something truly heinous; that the Winchesters would forget about him, or maybe that Heaven would forget about him. Something to wipe himself from existence, remove himself from what he's done. Maybe he'd try and sell it as attempting to protect them from him, but...yeah, nobody would really buy that for long. For all his bravery in battle, Castiel very much prefers to run away from problems of a more emotional nature.
The Theorem has broken down, and is drifting toward a black hole. There is very little hope of outside rescue. What does your character do?
Castiel tends to find some of the most extreme solutions possible (like blowing almost all the bulkheads in the hopes that the blast of depressurization will shoot the ship out of the gravitational pull...somehow), picks one, and sticks to it like it's the word of God. He is usually patient enough to let other people try their own options first, sometimes even helpfully offering his own services, but if it seems like they're getting down to the wire and there isn't anything safe left to try, he's the guy to be like, "Okay. I'm gonna try something." And then without consulting anybody else, he just goes and does it.
If his Hail Mary plan completely falls through, well...it's unfortunate but at that point he'd probably suggest they all get blackout drunk. He can be a defeatist. He might try vacating his vessel and flying off while light can still escape the pull and see if he can help that way, but if he's locked in then he'll do down with the ship absolutely hammered, thank you. Part of living a jalbjsoifllion years is that when Death comes for you (for like the fourth time) you...kind of are chill about it.
